Kolyma Highway And Lena Highway (The Road Of Bones)
Popular as the Road of Bones, the Kolyma Highway, and Lena Highway are in Russia’s Siberian region. The Siberian terrain is one of the toughest regions to traverse in the world. The road is 1914 kilometers long and poses various challenges to drivers such as unpaved roads, low visibility, ice, mud, and extreme weather conditions.
The entire stretch is a combination of the A360 Lena Highway and the R504 Kolyma Highway, and the Lena River Ice Road joins the highways. The winter season is the preferred time when you can access this stretch. In the rainy season, the highways take the form of a dilemma that causes traffic jams that continue for miles. You can reach this muddy terrain with the help of 4×4 vehicles.
Killar to Pangi Road, via Kishtwar (India)
The Killar to Pangi Road can give you a hair-raising experience. This is a paradise for people who love adventure, mountainous terrain and driving on nerve-wracking roads.
This patch is accessible during the summer only. It is 8280 feet above sea level and stretches over 70.8 miles long, and is wide enough so that only one jeep can pass through at a time. There are no guardrails, and the road is unbelievably unstable at certain places. The local villagers built it around 100 years ago, and there has been no repair work for several decades now. You can’t afford to make a false move while driving here, because if you do, you will fall 2000 feet down the vertical cliff. The terrifying videos on the internet can make it tough for you to give this stretch a try.
North Yungas Road (Bolivia)
The Road of Death, the North Yungas Road, is 49.7 miles long and is 15,256 feet above sea level. If you are already terrified by reading the nickname, then this terrain is certainly not for you.
The one-lane road takes you from La Paz to Coroico and has vertical drops of around 3000 feet straight into the Amazon rainforest. Sadly, we lost a huge part of it during the 2019 Amazon Rainforest Fires, but you could enjoy the views of what’s left of the forest. If you are still not overwhelmed, the Road of Death has more than 200 turns that can make you shiver. If reports are to go by, 300 people lost their lives on this road until 1994. Even the South Yungas Road, which takes you to Cochabamba, is equally threatening. Drive at your own risk.
Zoji La Pass (India)
This one is in India and is famous as one of the most notorious roads in the world. It’s at the height of 11,575 feet and is 5.6 miles long. The main challenges while driving on this terrain are many. This includes lack of guardrails, narrow space, completely unpaved patch, and of course, extreme weather conditions.
The Himalayas are famous for some of the most challenging landscapes ever, and driving through any of them can put your life at risk. The Zoji La Pass is certainly one of them. It connects Srinagar to Leh and is inaccessible in the winters. Landslides are a huge issue here and therefore. You have to have nerves of steel while you sit at the steering and push forward.
These are just four of the most dangerous roads in the world. You can get an idea of what makes them so threatening by going through their videos that are available online. If you can muster up the courage to set foot on these highways, try your luck. We are sure that you will have the time of your life and make numerous memories while at it!
