Go beyond the usual Mykonos and Santorini route and acquaint yourself with the magical Grecian islands.
Milos
Everyone knows about the beautiful Venus de Milo, but very few have visited her motherland. In the Cyclades region, this volcanic island boasts of some of the gorgeous beaches of Greece. You can take a plane or ship from Athens to visit it. The popular honeymoon spot would rekindle the romance in your relationship.
The Sarakiniko’s white rocks and the Kleftiko caves are mesmerizing, and not forget the crystal-clear waters of Firiplaka. To tap into your adventurous self, you can reach Theiorixeia and swim amid the ruins of a now closed-down sulfur mine in 1978.
Koufonisia (Suntrap Islands)
Koufonisia is an island between the Cyclades, and it may not offer you the lure of modern-day city life. However, it would give you the relaxation and joy of paradise. The beauty of the clean beaches, local parties, and festivals and the beauty of the picturesque landscapes are too hard to miss. It does not have an airport there. But you can either take a boat from Piraeus (the port of Athens) or fly to Naxos and then take a short ferry ride.
Koufonisia consists of three islands, Ano (upper) Koufonisi, and has only 300 inhabitants, Kato (lower) Koufonisi. It just a few buildings and famous Greeks taverns, and Keros, which most tourists cannot visit as it comes under a protected archaeological area. You can stay only in Ano Koufonisi and from there, find a trip to Kato Koufonisi. You can rent a bike and visit the clear water beaches at Italida and Pori. The food there is delectable, and take selfies next to the windmill while you catch a marvelous sunset.
Elafonisos
The beautiful island of Elafonisos, Peloponnese Peninsula, is a tiny and unique, tiny island and has the oldest submerged town, Pavlopetri. You can dive into the mystery of the submerged city that is 13ft (4m) underwater, and enjoy snorkeling. As a beach, it’s nothing short of gorgeous!
The water is crystal clear, and you can sink in the soft white sand of the clean beaches. It has two beaches separated only by a tiny sand bar. It is our idea of a quiet island with only 600 people living there. So, you can enjoy a relaxed, peaceful holiday with sumptuous food and friendly locals.
Agistri
Little Agistri is one of the hidden gems of Greek islands. It is one of the Saronic islands and the very big city of Athens, but it seems far away from the madding crowd. Agistri is the choice of Athenians for a weekend getaway, but not many tourists know about this untouched paradise. It is a great place to go swimming and enjoy the beauty of pine-forested scenery. It is impossible to believe that such a beautiful place could be near a big and populous city.
Gavdos
Gavdos is breathtaking, but not many people know of its existance. Well, as in the case of most picturesque and idyllic places, it isn’t very easy to visit. You have got to take a ferry from the south of Crete. But most of the crowds are oblivious of the magnificence of this tiny Grecian island. Yes, there aren’t many options as far as hotels are concerned to stay. But then that shouldn’t stop you from discovering and exploring the beauty of this heavenly island!
